David P. Bartels of Amherst, an optometrist and business owner who was equally at home on the water, in the snow or in the Willow Ridge neighborhood in West Amherst, died Sept. 27 in the McAuley Residence in the Town of Tonawanda, after a long illness.

Never got to meet him but spoke to him a number of times and was by his office a few times. I always seemed to have just missed him. He lived and practiced around the corner (literally) from my mother-in-law, hence my attempts at connecting with him. He did make me one of his Tiger Lens iPhone to slit lamp adapter which I use all the time.

RIP Dave, and condolences to his family.
