Eye docs give province the stink eye - Yahoo News Canada

Go Canadians!

Completely understandable. $44 for patients over 65?!? This is what we may have in store if the AOA is successful in getting vision coverage for those on Medicare.

Currently, the province pays $44 in OHIP funding for eye exams for younger people up to age 19, and for those over age 65.

Adults from the ages of 20 to 65 pay for the cost of an exam out of pocket, or through insurance, which ranges from $100 to $120.

Unfortunately, anti-optometry interests and their lobbyists are as active as ever. The backers of restrictive Medicare Advantage plans, big insurers, vision discount plans, unscrupulous eyeglass and contact lens sellers, and online vision test pushers have and will continue to oppose us and seek to shift the debate over Medicare expansion as they do on other issues.

They want nothing more than to hijack any new benefit and center it around their schemes for intrusion into the doctor-patient relationship that’s at the heart of optometry practices across the country, including mine in Lambertville, Michigan. That’s why the AOA is fighting back with everything we’ve got to defend our independence as physicians and our expanding role not only in Medicare but throughout the health care system.

While we may not be able to match them dollar-for-dollar, it is essential that we continue to outthink and outwork them. But, to do that, we need thousands more doctors just like you to join us in this fight right now. With nearly $1.5 billion in Medicare reimbursement received annually by Doctors of Optometry, the AOA’s efforts have never been more important to our profession’s future than they are now.
