Synopsis:

Accurately determining patient benefits at check-in has historically been a problem spot for many practices.

The process can be time-consuming for staff, fraught with inaccuracies, and interfere with their ability to take care of the patient standing in front of them.

Clearwave is a cloud based healthcare software company that is focused on improving the patient experience while allowing clients to move back-office financial processes to the time of schedule and time of appointment.

The results of Clearwave are increased time of service collections, reduced collection costs, reduced write-offs related to bad debt and better patient satisfaction scores. These results are driven by Clearwave’s patient authentication network.

When paul lost his during a recent move, it was like the world had come to an end :)

It is a cool little device though.

Interesting piece of trivia: the Roku box was originally developed by Netflix, but at the last second they sold off their entire hardware division, because they realized it would be better for them to just have the Netflix service run anywhere, as opposed to on their own devices. Smart move, i'd say :)

Hope to see everyone at the show, i've never seen Clearwave in action either, so this will be a first for me!

the Roku has one added bonus if you really want to be alone...a headset that attaches to the remote for total isolation.

For those who have never seen a Roku, the key advantages over other streaming media devices:

1. The remote uses wifi direct, so you don't have to aim it at the screen. In fact, you don't have to be in the same room as the device. This is important because..

2. it is tiny, so you can mount it to the back of your TV, thus it is virtually invisible. Again, the remote doesn't need line-of-sight with it, making this possible.

3. it can run Plex. This is critical if you have PCs around the house that you like to stream movies or music from (as we do, the collective master works of Casey Kasem's Scoobie Doo.... sigh.)

Some observations about the Webinar...

Gerard White was a good presenter who is enthusiastic about the potential using 2014 automation to make the patient interaction with the administrators, a painless procedure.

He clarified some points about how the system works. Unfortunately it was too generic, using examples far removed from optometry. I hope he can return for a followup Webinar that is focused on the challenges faced by ODs. He should show how this automation can assist even a single OD practice averaging 3 patients an hour, rather than a multi doctor clinic seeing 100 patients or more a day .

For sure with most patients visiting your office with multilayers of vision care plans combined with medical insurance with high deductibles and co-payments, having a real time idea of what you are dealing with before treating the patient could be very helpful. How to manage these patients based on their insurance is a topic best reserved for the Ethics Forum, which I will get underway today.

The speaker ran over his allotted one hour. We tried to get in as many questions you had as possible. If there are some unanswered question this is the place to ask. There was so much material covered it might be useful for those serious about adding the kiosk to your practice, to review the Webinar a second time.

I enjoyed the webinar, the technology looks great. The price surprised me though. I thought $4-6000 for the kiosk was OK, even $500 per month, though a little steeper than expected, was OK. But $8K to $20K for the setup was steep. Without knowing for sure that it would work for vision benefits and optical makes it a tough sell. If I could be sure it would replace one front desk person it would be worth it I guess. Good show.
 
i had login issues, but listened for a while. Doesnt appear to be for a smaller sized optometry practice, and I didnt stick around to the end, but I don't believe they do vision insurance. Now THAT would be impressive!

He said they do vision insurance but the different vision insurances give different things. Some give everything you need others just say that they do have that vision insurance.

They do vision insurance -- the major strength of the platform is that it can reach into the insurance companies in real-time and get the data you need, no human intervention required.

I think i'm going to ping gerard and see if I can get more details about the insurers that they cover -- can you guys come up with a list that you'd like to know about?

Gotcha -- as I saw in the demo, there are slots for primary, secondary, etc. I'd like to see how it handles the most common plans that everyone runs into, so that's why i'm asking folks to give me the names of the companies that they'd like to see.
